IELTS 
International English Language Testing System. This test is designed by international organizations to evaluate the English language ability of candidates who wish to go to other English speaking countries for study, work or permanent settlement.

Management:
The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP (IELTS Australia), altogether manage the IELTS.

Students and professional who wish to go to USA, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Australia appear for this test through either British Council or IDP. Govt. Institutions, Organisations, Immigration Authorities, Universities and other departments of various countries recognize IELTS.

Categories: Academic Category for students and General Category for others.

Important: When you are sure that you have to appear for IELTS, book your seat at least a month before, else you will be too late.

Sections in the examination:
1.    Listening - 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
2.    Speaking – Interview with evaluator, 15 minutes
3.    Reading – It is different for both Academic and General exam - 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes
4.    Writing – It is different for both Academic and General exam - 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes

SCORING:
You get a score between 1(Lowest) and 9(Highest) for each section. Minimum score of 6 or more in each section is what universities demand.

IELTS Speaking:

It will be a face to face interview with the evaluator. Speaking test usually happens on a different day than exam of other sections. Evaluation is based on your fluency, word choice, sentence formation, voice clarity, intonation and also the content of the topic you talk about.

Total time spent: Approximately 15 min
Introduction section (5 min): Examiner will introduce him/herself and then asks you questions on general topics like what is meaning of your name, what is your nick name, do you work or study?

Topic to speak (5 min): You will be given a topic, pen and paper to makes notes for 1 min and then speak on it for 2 minutes. Eg. Which is your favorite animal and why is it your favorite? Which is better, living in a city or village?

Discussion (5 min): Examiner will ask you open ended question which might be related or different from topic you have spoken about. Eg- How different is it to live in a city and a village?

IELTS Reading:

Reading is the second important scoring part of the IELTS test
Time spent: 60 min
Content: It contains three or sometimes four reading passages of increasing difficulty. Total 40 questions to be answered in 60 min. Try not to take more than 1 min in answering each question and directly write the answer on answer sheet to save time. No extra time will be given in any circumstance.

IELTS Writing:

Academic Writing

2 articles to be written in total 60 minutes time

Section 1: You may be asked to explain the data in graph or a diagram in your own words.
Section 2: You may be asked to discuss / write an article, essay or may be a letter on some general topic.

Tip: Initially spend 1 min to think about the topic and whatever comes to your mind, keep writing it in the form of a clue at some corner of page with pencil. This will help you in sequentially writing about the topic and cover up everything which you thought about. Do not forget to rub your clues once you

General Writing

2 articles to be written in 60 minutes

Section 1: Writing a formal letter based on the given situation in correct format.
Section 2: Writing a Essay or article based on the given topic.

IELTS Listening

Listening is the most scoring section of IELTS. During the exam you will have to answer 40 questions out of the 4 different recordings you will listen to. Total duration of the test is 30 minutes. Generally the questions in this section have fill in the blanks, match the following, multiple choice, sentence completion, and one word answer.

Tips for preparation:
1.    Watch English news channel like CNN or BBC everyday for 1 hour and try to understand everything.
2.    Watch English movies using head phone to familiarize you with accent, word stress, slang in the conversation. This will help you a lot in speaking and listening section both.
3.    Practice more to score more.

Tips for Exam:
1.    Read all the instructions very carefully, you will not have a second chance to listen the same thing.
2.    Familiarize yourself with the voice of speakers in the conversation? They will not be taking names again and again. Understand the whole situation and sequence in the conversation.
3.    Write the answers directly on the answer sheet to save time. You may copy it wrong if you copy it later in hurry.

IELTS Result

The result is declared on the 13th day of your exam.
