Road accident, the combination of these two words itself sounds scary. It’s not very surprising if you feel tired or sleepy while driving back home at the end of the day or on trips involving long drive. And everyone understands how fatal even a quick 5 seconds nap be when you are the driver.  Thinking over this matter seriously, a team of researchers from Nottingham Trent University developed smart car seats. These seats look simple but work special by warning the driver if he is about to fall asleep with its Electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor system.
Smart Car Seat
Prof. William Hurley and Tilak Dias, a part of Advanced Textile Research Group in Nottingham Trent University will be further executing this project with a company called Plessey. Further study will involve the integration of Electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor system directly into the fabric of car seats in an effort to save lives. These sensors work by detecting the heart signals of the driver to indicate if driver is losing alertness.

During the initial warning, the driver will be asked to pull over the car. If he gets alert or pulls over then its fine; however, if ignored, the system will further sends signals to the car to activate active cruise control( if present), or lane departure technology to prevent accidents.

The developers have already demonstrated how the cardiac signals can be measured using Electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor system embedded within the driver's seat. The Automobile Giant- Daimler has already introduced cars with 2 and 4 seater ‘Smart’ Car Seats. Within few months we can expect ‘Smart’ car seats to be a part of Luxury cars and in few years it may be a standard feature of new cars for extra safety.
