In an effort to make Chicago  a safer, more efficient and cleaner city to live, Urban Center for Computation and Data joined hands with Argonne National Laboratory in a project called ‘Array of Things’. In this project small sensors, which will look like curled metal fixtures will be fixed on the streetlights in the city. These sensors will be will provide information regarding foot traffic, air quality, light intensity, noise, temperature, precipitation, wind speed and will also monitor cell phone  traffic in the area.

Some experts have raised questions like the amount and kind of data collected by the sensors might be much more than required and this could be an intrusion into personal movements of people. Some serious precautions have to be taken while designing these sensors so that they monitor the signal rather than record the digital address of every smart device.

The first sensor could be in place by mid-July. The company hopes to start with  the installation of sensors at eight Michigan Avenue intersections and cover the rest of the area along with the expansion of the project.
