I am not a professional photographer but interested in learning it. This spark had ignited inside me almost 6 month ago. I am an IT professional, working with one of the MNC in Gurgaon. Traveling is my passion. I don’t miss any chance of traveling unless some emergency holds me back. Traveling and photography is an excellent combination.  Many times when I travel, I feel that I should capture every special moment, be it local people, different dishes, nature, specialties and much more in my camera.

A click from Nikon A110
I remember when one of my paternal cousin gifted me a ‘Yashika Camera’. That was the first camera and the most exiting gift I ever had. I used to buy a camera roll for INR 80 and consciously click every picture out of total 20 in the roll. Those days are just memories now. Now, I have a Nikon Coolpix AW110 Point and Shoot, and a Canon EOS 1100D DSLR. Both are excellent in a way. I am not comparing them but all I want to say is that, if you follow few basic rules correctly, only then you can expect a better pictures. Otherwise, even with a DSLR Camera, you may not be able to do better than a normal point and shoot.

Here are few basic tips collected from the online photography courses and applied practically with my own camera :

1. Manual: As soon as you buy a camera, it is important to read the manual to get the best out of it and make it worth the money you have spent. I mean what is the point of buying an expensive camera if the only buttons you are familiar with are on/off and click. Understand the menu, know more about your camera, choose the correct mode while capturing.
2. Posing: We always ask people to stand in the front and smile, definitely the smile adds a lot to their picture, but it looks completely posed. Artificial smile will not make them look as beautiful as they will appear with a natural smile. So, capture real moments, no special posing is required.
3. Candid picks: Picture taken when standing at the same level of the people who are getting captured looks far better. Especially when are capturing kids, if we kneel down and then click, we can capture them fully from the side and front. Try to click when they are busy in their own world and not aware of getting clicked by someone. This will show you their real moments in the picture, and also much more likes on facebook.
4. Placement: Do not always stand exactly in the front and click. Focusing on the person’s face and keeping it exactly in the center of the picture is really when every picture will have the same thing. Absolutely no innovation and no fun! For capturing your cat or dog, just kneel down, get to their level, go close and click.
5. Cover the subject: Ensure that you cover the subject correctly, I mean you should know that what to cover more, a group of people or a group of people with the ceremony in the background. You have to highlight your subject more than anything else inside the frame.
6. Zoom: Use zoom only if you can’t do without it. It reduces the quality of pictures if you are using a normal point and shoot camera with digital zoom. If you have a DSLR with a good lens and optical zoom, then use zoom to your convenience with basics of photography in your mind. A camera with powerful optical zoom clicks better than the one with digital zoom as it leaves the control to your hand.
7. Flash: Avoid using the flash unnecessarily, especially when you have enough of light around. Natural light will give you a better look than unnecessary shiny face. Keep it on manual settings rather than automatic.
8. Attitude:  If you really want to be the one clicking the best pictures among your family member, friends and people around you, then you have to have an attitude in the same direction. Do not hesitate if you think kneeling down, standing on cliff, sitting on the ground or for that matter getting inside water (with water proof camera) can get you a better click.
9. Light: For outdoor photography, make use of natural light as much as possible. Early morning and an hour before sunset is the best time for nice clicks.  If you are clicking during the day time, make sure you are not clicking in extreme sunlight unless you are an expert and also sun should be at you back, not behind the thing you are capturing.
10. Battery: Even if you are not planning to go on a trip, make sure that the battery of camera is fully charged to click any time. You may want to keep it outside your camera in summers to avoid any hazards like leakage and any other kind of hazards.
 11. Grip: While clicking, have a strong grip on your camera with both the hands. Else, your picture will be blurry.

Say cheeeesssssseeee!! Click Click!!
